Web Developer VS WebDev: when the passion for code rages on

In the fast-paced world of web development, there are legends and myths fuelling endless debates: tabs or spaces, dark mode or light mode, and above all, the great duel between Web Developer and WebDev.

We often hear talk of “WebDev” and “web developer” (or Web Developer). Do these two terms really describe the same thing, or do they cover different profiles? This article compares these two ways of approaching the profession.

The Web Developer: The Meticulous Coder

The Web Developer is the one who works meticulously on their code, cherishing it like a zen garden of perfectly nested JavaScript functions. They spend hours polishing their lines, using naming conventions worthy of poetry, and never go to bed before every file is formatted according to the sacred rules of Prettier or ESLint.

This character is also the one who could give you an entire lecture on the art of structuring a project according to the hierarchy of React Components, all while grumbling about anyone who dares to mix HTML, CSS and JavaScript in the same file (sacrilege!). A strong espresso, a lofi beats playlist, and they’re ready to build the website of your dreams — as long as it’s semantically correct.

The WebDev: The Full Stack Adventurer

On the other side, there’s the WebDev. A little more laid-back, sometimes wearing a hoodie with cryptic references to VS Code or memes about servers crashing at 2am. The WebDev is a jack-of-all-trades, equally capable of coding a solid backend in Node.js and tweaking a CSS form without (too much) grumbling. They only lose their cool once: when npm install takes more than 10 minutes.

The WebDev isn’t afraid to jump on trends, try out frameworks like Svelte, or juggle the infernal trio: JavaScript, TypeScript and "the-latest-library-that-makes-your-site-10x-faster". Their secret? They always have one or two GitHub repos ready to be copied to save a bit of time. No stress, it’s all in plan B (except when Webpack decides to act up).

The Hidden Superpowers

Web Developers and WebDevs share one superpower: the ability to decode emails where the client proudly claims that "it doesn’t display properly in Internet Explorer". But deep down, both have their flaws too. The Web Developer sometimes gets lost in the details, optimising elements that should never have existed in the first place (hello, IE8 support!). The WebDev, meanwhile, can sometimes deploy a project with a dozen forgotten console.logs*, which results in "Test OK 123 …IHAVETOSLEEEEEP" showing up in production and, occasionally, a puzzled look from a client, hinting at their bewilderment in the face of such great creative potential.

CONSOLE.LOG() = *a kind of teletext for
                developers, letting you display
                messages in a site's "console"

So, WebDev or Web Developer?

In reality, the two profiles are complementary and meet different needs. The web developer, with their rigour and attention to detail, and the WebDev, with their versatility and ability to quickly deliver complete projects.

Together, they cover the full range of skills needed for a successful web project, from precise coding to managing complex bugs.
